Season 3 Episode 11

Season 3 Episode 11: Culture of Connection
Practice of the Week: Invest time in relationships.

One of the highest indicators of happiness and purpose at work is how well people are connected with others. We must prioritize connections and relationships. Extroverts and introverts agree – they want to have good working relationships. If you want a great culture, you must create a culture of connection.

Notes

Here are 3 practices that you can start this week to improve a culture of connection wherever you are:

  • Ask about people stuff before you talk about work stuff. - Create a moment for connection by talking about people stuff before you talk about work stuff.
  • Create spontaneous connections outside of scheduled meetings. - Our focus is to create a culture of connection. You don’t have to be weird or do anything too far out of the ordinary, but create spontaneous connections outside of what is regularly scheduled.
  • Laugh more often. - Laughter is a natural connection point. It also decreases stress and anxiety, making connection more possible. Teams and organizations who laugh together have been proven to tackle difficult projects or challenges better.

As you’re thinking and working on it, here are some practical questions to help:

  1. How do you typically start work conversations and meetings? What would it look like to make a personal connection before working on work?
  2. How often do you check in and create spontaneous connections with people? How might you do this more often?
  3. On a scale of 1 to 10, How would you rate the culture of connection on your team, in your organization, or where you regularly serve? What would be different if it was a 9 or 10?
