Simon Sinek says “Start with WHY.” Jim Collins says “start with WHO.” In uncertain times, what you really need is to start with Clarity and Purpose. When living and leading in uncertain times, CLARITY is the first cheat code. Without clarity, confusion and frustration will reign.

When living and leading in uncertain times, CLARITY is the first cheat code.
- So let me ask you: What is your purpose? - In times of uncertainty and anxiety, we all tend to wander and be tossed about. It’s so easy to get lost in competing priorities, frustrations, needs and challenges. All of this causes us to lose touch with our purpose. The answer is to get specific.
- By the way: Clarity of purpose isn’t only important for you, alone. - Who is around you and who you’re working with is important. I want you to help others to find, energize, and focus on THEIR purpose as well.
- Remember: Clarity is for people, projects, teams and organizations. - If the purpose of the training is to give people all of the information about a new software tool, I bet your approach would be different than if your purpose is for people to get comfortable and familiar working with the tool. Purpose is going to influence planning. Be part of creating a great culture.
- Finally, use clarity of purpose to make decisions. - Purpose clarifies action and so much more. Clarify your purpose, and keep it in front of you, and the whirlwind of options, busy work and walking around in circles will decrease.
Here are a few questions for this week as you start to think about clarity of purpose:
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how clear are YOU about your purpose? What would be different if your clarity level was a 9 or 10?
- Who is one person around you that seems like they’ve lost their purpose? How might you help?
- I want you to ask “why are we doing this” in a helpful way 2-3 times this week. Work with others to clarify purpose and make clarifying decisions.
