Season 3 Episode 10: Culture of Genius
Practice of the Week: Trust people to do what they are great at.
Everyone has an area, talent or ability where they are a genius. The more you release others to do that, the better your culture will be. Culture is hard to measure and name, but you will go a long way to build a great culture if you let people do as much work in their genius areas as possible and as little in the areas that drain them as possible.
Notes
To build this culture of genius, here are 3 actions that you can take, no matter who you’re working with:
- Tell people what they are great at. - This is important for a few reasons. First, because it creates a culture of celebration, strengths, and positive reinforcement. People like to hear about what’s going well and what they’re good at.
- Have a strong bias for people to do what they are great at. - Don’t just recognize or talk about strengths. Let people do as much work as possible in their areas of genius.
- Trust people in their areas of genius. - You have good people. Your people are geniuses in one or a few areas. So let them do it! Trust them! Let them run with it!
As you’re thinking and working on it, here are some practical questions to help:
- What would change if you and the people around you spent more time in your areas of genius? What needs to change to do that?
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do trust, empower and release your people to do what they love and are great at? What would be different if you scored a 9 or 10?
- See people’s area of genius and tell them about it at least 3 times this week.
